Dear Therapist

Dear White THerapist

This is your invitation

Dear White Therapist,

You went to school and you learned a little, about a lot of things. You took classes in counseling techniques, human development, and abnormal psychology. You had a diversity or multicultural counseling course. However, that did not prepare you for working with persons of color.

You did not learn about why when someone is looking for an African American counselor or another counselor of color, it is not kosher to put your name in the running if you are not an African American or a person of color.

You did not learn about the history of oppression that goes into your own profession.

…and how the power dynamic in the therapy room could be perceived (however small and unconscious as that continued oppression may be.)

You do not believe there is such a thing as “seeing color” and that you as a white therapist should be able to work with anyone, from any background, because you are great at forming relationships.

Yes, you are great at forming relationships, and yes you may identify as an ally, but it is not coming off that way. You have blind spots. Everyone does. And because you are good at your job as a therapist, you have recognized this.

You know it is important that you do your own work.

But, you are nervous and uncomfortable. You don’t want another book with no one to debrief with. You want to learn from someone who can give you information and help you process your unknown and internal bias in a safe environment without fear or shame.

By coming here, you are taking that step to do your own work and helping other clinicians in your community by becoming more aware.

By working with us you will see how you can be an ally, lift up other therapists of color in your local community, and continue to build great relationships and do great work.

Contact us now for a 15 minute consultation where you can learn more about how this will help your practice, and if group or individual sessions are the right fit for you.

We know you don’t want to just read another book. You want to talk to someone in a safe environment about what being a white therapist means in a diverse world.

You will learn how to network with other therapists of color so you can refer to or refer out if needed.

You will learn when it is not only important, but necessary to refer to another therapist. You will be respected for doing so. You will learn about oppression being echoed in the therapy dynamic. You will learn how to address the issue of race if a client who is not white comes to work with you and how you can do this is a caring, professional, non oppressive way.)
